Philosophical Perspective

I believe historical and cultural contexts are important to Art Education because these areas of knowledge expose students to diverse ways to view their environment as well as the communities & cultures beyond their own

Instructional Strategy

Local architecture and how it relates to named architectural styles. Take photos of local buildings that more or less are examples of known styles. Use these as references for a unit on architecture. The introductory activity can be a guessing game-, which is the oldest (newest) building? What characteristics make you think it is the oldest (newest) building? Create style definition visual aids- introduces students to concept of style in architecture using the visual aids, noting how the physical characteristics define style. Play a matching game using the photos & visual aids for points towards a grade.

Reflections:

I hope to improve my methods for locating resources on local and state history for use as thematic material in my visual art lessons.  I know the constant use of computer technology in the Institute will help me achieve this goal.
